Why should I study health information management?
Modern eHealth systems contribute to providing high-quality, efficient health care and help to support patient care and clinical research. Their management, however, is complex. Specially trained experts are needed who possess technical competencies as well as competencies in the management and organization of IT-supported health care processes. Medical and technological progress together with demographic changes will lead to an even higher demand for such experts in the future .
The Health Information Management program offers in-depth training and delivers competencies in managing modern eHealth systems.

The program is offered by UMIT, the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology.
Who is UMIT?
UMIT, the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology, is 90% owned by the Federal State of Tyrol and 10% owned by the University of Innsbruck.
As a modern health university, UMIT, located in Hall in Tirol in Austria, has specialized in new vocational fields and research areas and thus responds to the latest challenges in health care and technology. Established in 2001 as one of the first private universities in Austria, UMIT has more than 15 years of experience in graduate and post-graduate training.
How is the program organized?
The Health Information Management program comprises three semesters of fully online-based training.
Overall, you will have to actively participate in five online-based modules.
In the third semester, you will plan, conduct, evaluate and present a practical project as part of an on-the-job internship. This practical project can be integrated into your daily work environment, allowing you to implement methods and tools of health information management in your daily context. The project shows that you have mastered the theory and practice of health information management and that you are able to apply the newly obtained competencies.
At the end of the third semester, you will present the results of your project work in a final defense before an examination committee.

How do I join the program?
You can only join this program if you are an employee of Siemens Healthineers. Please contact Mrs. Maya Nixel (firstname.lastname@example.org) to verify that you are eligible.
If you are eligible, you have to personally apply for the program. Chose "application" in the left menue and carefully enter your data, including your address, the company address, and the billing address. (only available in Autumn 2019).
You will then be asked to submit by e-mail the following documents:
- Your CV
- Your photo (for the student record)
- A letter of motivation
- A copy of an identification document
- Copy of highest academic degree.
Please note that by submitting your application and accepting the GPC regulations, you (and not your employer) enter into a direct contract with UMIT.
After formal approval of your application, a one-on-one interview with the program representative at UMIT will be organized via video conference. In this interview, your motivation, your background and your personal learning objectives will be discussed. Upon successful completion of the interview, you will be formally admitted to the program.
What does the program cost?
The normal costs for the Health Information Management program are 2.500 Euro per semester.
For Siemens participants, a 10% deduction applies. The overall costs are thus 2.250 Euro per semester, which corresponds to 6.750 Euro for the full three semesters.
Please note: You will get the invoice of your study fees at the beginning of each semester. The invoice is send to the billing address you indicated. You have to make sure by yourself that you or your emplyoyer is going to pay this invoice. If the invoice is not paid, you cannot continue the program.
How many participants will be in my group?
Normally, the number of participants in one study group is between 10 and 20.
How much time do I need to invest in the program?
We expect that you are able to invest between 10 and 15 hours per week. The workload varies depending on your individual preliminary knowledge of the given topic and on your own motivation and time commitment.
Please note: Learning in this program functions best if you are able to work daily on the assigned learning activities.
Free time is during the Christmas and summer holidays (normally in August).
What can I expect in the program?
Please note: This is not a “classical” eLearning program where you study mostly on your own. Instead, we use an award-winning instructional design that demands your activity from the very first day. Among others, you are required to define your personal learning goals, select activities where you want to dive in, read materials, search for additional materials, prepare presentations, discuss your solutions with your peers, give feedback and receive feedback, develop and share new perspectives, deliver assignments, and reflect on your learning progress. Thus, ongoing participation is demanded. The overall time estimate is around 10 – 15 hours per week, with daily activity is strongly encouraged.
The program allows you to decide on which topics you want to focus on in more depth, and which focus you will only have a short look at. It thus takes into account your background and experience and your personal learning objectives. But this also means that you need to be active to gather and analyse materials and resources and to present them to the group. Thus, this approach demands your ongoing activity - just skimming through provided materials will not work in this course!
How does online-based learning work?
The program addresses the special needs of working students. It allows you to bring in your own professional experiences, to work on realistic problems, to connect with fellow students, and to transfer the new competencies to your working context.
We use a modern instructional design for joint learning in an online-based setting. Learning is fully online and there is no need to attend courses at the university. The final presentation and defense of the practical projects is usually done at the university, although a defense by videoconference may be permitted for our international students on request.
The program is built on the slogan: Developing competencies together! Research shows that learning works best when done in interaction with peers and instructors. Our approach therefore supports ongoing interaction and communication between students and instructors.
Our approach has already earned its first award: We received the 2018 eLearning Award for our approach on social learning. So you can be sure that we know how to successfully manage online-based learning.
How is a module organized?
Each module typically lasts for six weeks and is structured into weekly blocks. Within each weekly block, you will be asked to work on certain learning activities. These learning activities
- are designed to be interesting and practically relevant,
- require you to present and discuss your own solutions,
- facilitate the immediate application of theoretical concepts,
- promote interdisciplinary exchange within the group,
- draw on realistic problems to show how methods and tools can be applied to your solution,
- facilitate the exchange of different points of view, and
- make it possible to bring in your own prior knowledge and professional experience.
Typically, for each learning activity, you will be asked to present your solution to the group (usually via an online forum, sometimes via video or screencast). You will also be asked to comment on the solutions presented by your peers and to join a group discussion that will further advance your understanding of the topic. Part of the assessment will be based on your activity in this community of inquiry.
The instructor is present throughout the module to give input, provide individual feedback, and help in case of questions or problems.
Are there any lectures or events where I have to be online at a pre-defined point of time?
You are fully free to chose when to learn and to contribute to the course. This means that, with very few exceptions (e.g. oral exams), you are free to join the virtual classroom whenever you have time.
Normally, all needed documents and etivities (learning activities) of the next week are made available on Sunday. You are then free when to work on them.
We recommended, however, to be online every day, to join the discussions of your peers and to keep up-to-date while the course progresses.
How is the assessment organized?
The assessment of your learning progress is based on assignments that you have to perform during the six weeks of the module. Such assignments may comprise
- writing a project plan for your own IT project,
- proposing an IT architecture for a given case study,
- implementing a data warehouse and analyzing data, and
- writing a reflection on your learning goals and your learning progress.
Your final assessment will also consider your activity and engagement in the group discussions. Sometimes, short written open-book tests or oral interviews via videoconference may be added to verify your learning progress. All assessments will normally be finished upon end of the module to allow some free time before the next module starts.
Which competencies will I have after completion of the program?
Upon completion of the program, you will have obtained the following competencies:
- Systematically analyze and assess processes within and between health care facilities and develop and help to implement IT-based infrastructures.
- Plan and help to implement clinical information systems within and between health care facilities.
- Organize projects with regard to the planning, analysis, implementation, evaluation and management of modern health IT systems and implement the projects in interdisciplinary project teams.
- Work in or lead interdisciplinary teams competently, purposefully and conscientiously, professionally communicate positions and results, and defend your decisions.
After completion of the program, can I join the master’s program in Health Information Management (duration: 5 semester)?
If you have already obtained a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) before, you could indeed continue with the master’s program.
In this case, the first two semesters are fully recognized and you can then move to the master’s program. The overall duration of the master program is five semester.
However, please note that the master’s program, at the moment, is available only in German. It is not planned at the moment to offer a fully 5-semester English-language master.
Which degree will I receive at the end of the program?
After successful completion of all modules and upon successful defense, you will receive a so-called Academic Expert degree (Akademische Expertin/Akademischer Experte):

Who are my instructors in the program?
All instructors are experienced researchers and teachers.
Prof. Dr. Elske Ammenwerth is head of the Institute of Health Informatics at UMIT. She is member of the International Academy for Health Sciences Informatics, Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, head of the Working Group on Assessment of Health Information Systems of the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI) and chair of the Austrian Working Group on Medical Informatics (AK-MI). Her research focusses on health information systems, health IT evaluation and consumer informatics.
Prof. Dr. Werner Hackl is assistant professor at the Institute of Health Informatics at UMIT. His research focusses on reuse of clinical routine data and patient safety informatics. He is editorial board member of the Yearbook of Medical Informatics of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and president of the Austrian Society for Nursing Informatics (ÖGPI).
Prof. Dr. Alexander Hörbst is head of the eHealth and Innovation Unit at UMIT. He is member of the board of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) and Austrian representative within EuroRec. His research focusses on eHealth, electronic health records and applied robotics in health care.
